Richard Bizley
Richard was born profoundly deaf in 1959 and has had a life-long interest in art and the natural sciences. He is a Fellow of the International Association of Astronomical Artists and his paintings have been published in various magazines and books and as well as exhibited around the world. Recently he started painting local scenes.
He has synaesthesia and in spite of not being able to enjoy music at all, he is able to 'hear' things that he sees, in the form of music in his head. This could be towering cloudscapes, or moving or repeating objects such as lights on runways but he does not "hear" colours. It was only recently that he realised this was unusual and a synaesthesia expert visited him and confirmed that he had this condition.
Richard cannot imagine art without being able to 'hear' composition and scenes which he visualises in his mind before commencing a painting. In this way, he knows how a painting will 'sound' before it is finished. This heightened visual sense gives his paintings a unique dimension.
Richard owns the UK's only Prehistoric and Space art gallery in Lyme Regis - 12a Coombe Street, Lyme Regis, Dorset, DT7 3PR. (Opposite the Dinosaurland Museum).
