Jay Collins
Social networking and a feeling of connectedness are fundamental issues explored by Jay’s artwork. She believes that the creation of a strong support network can lead to a feeling of greater stability, comfort, continuity and even empowerment without which one can feel excluded and isolated. Her work openly documents the connections and networks in which she is involved both in the short-term, via her daily activities, and the long-term, via her lifetime connections.
Family Clothes Line is a collection of identities of a family line, observed via their clothing. Within a 78-year range, from great granddaughter (16 years) to great grandmother (93 years), we can observe the differences and commonalities in identities of the family members. By observing these aspects purely through their choice of clothing, it may allow us to realise how bound we are within our own constraints of comfort, tradition and familiarity. This may also serve to trigger assumptions of each person with regard to their age, social status and health.
