Dawn Steel
Dawn is a self taught visual artist who loves to experiment with colour, texture and line in her paintings and drawings.
A wheelchair user as a result of Multiple Sclerosis for about 16 years, she often sees colours as textures and now immerses herself in painting and photography. Using this as an extra sense allows her to explore the world from her altered perspective whilst putting paint on canvas helps her interpret the changes happening around and within her.
Independence became such a strong drive for Dawn as a disabled person that it took a while to realize that independence is more about making her own choices and choosing her own risks than doing everything herself.
Oils are her preferred medium when painting, sensual and flowing they help her connect with her environment - something she continuously strives to take back from multiple sclerosis.
Dawn was a finalist in Artist of the Year 2001, exhibiting her work at Olympia and is now trying to develop a new direction in her art forms with a more holistic view of her life.
